Regarding your article about Hayward Star Clear Plus filters, which size is fully adequate for an inground 18,000 gallon with 3/4 hp – some people say the C900 and others are saying the C1200. Some people want to sell me a Pentair and say that the threads “erode” on the Star Clear Plus. Some people say the Haywards need new o-rings every 6 months? Your article explained some of this, but any extra help is much appreciated.

I installed my Navigator about a year ago and found a few issues that were fixed without too much effort: lost spring from the feet, malfunctioning A frame (caused the hose to knot up and immobilize, and inadequate suction on a dedicated line to make the unit work. For the latter I had to sharply reduce the bottom pool suction and let the Navigator have the greater suction to work. Unfortunately, I can only vacuum or skim–not both. Hayward recommended their vacuum plate–about $90! I’ll wait on Santa Claus for some help.

My bigger issue is something that Hayward denies and your site clarifies succinctly! When the pump is off, the cone adapter (and Navigator hose) simply floats away and will not work when the pump starts again. Tech support said my skimmer may need a special fitting. It’s a standard 1 1/2 opening, clean and smooth. Then the tech said that their vacuum plate would be useful. Then they said that the Navigator should only be in the pool for six hours and then removed. That would certainly fix their problem and create more work for me.

Your blog says that the unit and hoses can be used 24/7. I totally concur and wonder why Hayward is putting out such nonsense. After reading your blog I realized that their cone adapter is made such that it simply lifts itself out of the skimmer hole without the pump vacuum to keep it attached. Hayward makes it sound like this is a unique problem.

I’m concerned that Hayward cannot find and provide a better adapter fitting made to hold the Navigator hose AND fit securely into the skimmer outlet. I’m also concerned that their first solution involves buying a new cone adapter or vacuum plate. And I also disagree with their recommendation to remove the Navigator after six hours.

It may be that I am expecting too much for $480; it is only a machine!

Great web site, Kevin! I just wanted to share my experience with a fiberglass in-ground pool. We’ve had the fiberglass finish for probably 10 years and recently, I went into the pool and when I came out, my arms and legs felt very prickly–like tiny needles were in them. I though it might have been an allergic reaction to something in the water. It went away after a few days. I got in the pool again and this time, sat on the steps–well, immediately the back of my legs felt like pin-cushions, it was horrible and almost unbearable to wear clothes or have the bedsheets touch my skin. Don’t know what made me think of this; but fiberglass exposure came to mind. I got some masking take and swabbed the areas and the prickliness went away immediately. I live in AZ and have heard that our heat takes its toll on fiberglass and it looks like I experienced that firsthand. We know have a pebble plastered finish and unfortunately, it cost me a tidy sum for demolition; but the pool was useless otherwise.

Pentair filters are okay. I’m partial to the Hayward Star Clear Plus.

There’s nothing inside a Hayward filter that can corrode. All the metal is stainless steel. The o-ring on a Hayward filter should last at least two years. This is true if it is properly maintained. That means it needs to be kept lubricated with either a silicone or teflon-based lubricant that won’t cause the o-ring to expand. Use Magic Lube, or whatever brand your pool store sells. Don’t use generic lubricant.
